Coin on a Headstone – What does it Mean?
Memorial Day. We look forward to it every year, but not always for the reason we should. While we prepare for our barbeques, picnics, or pool parties let’s take a moment to remember the real reason we are off work or school today.
Today we honor those that served who passed, and to recognize their personal sacrifice. There are veterans cemeteries all over the country, but if you would like to visit here at home there is one on Veterans Memorial Road.
Depicted in the photograph above are headstones of just a few of the many heroes that were laid to rest in our local Houston National Cemetery. These brave souls served our great nation to protect the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. If you choose to visit the cemetery, you may notice coins on the headstones. They aren’t there coincidentally, the coins are a message to the fallen soldier’s family that someone else visited to pay their respects.
Penny – means that someone visited
Nickel – means that the person and the soldier trained in boot camp together
Dime – means that the visitor served with the soldier
Quarter – means that the visitor was there when the soldier was killed
Memorial Day tradition suggests that the money is collected for donations to maintain the cemetery and to help with burial costs for indigent veterans.
Today I overheard a small voice while visiting the cemetery that touched my heart. “Dad, can we visit more soldiers?” Her daddy said “Sure sweetie, that sounds great.” The little girl ran across the field while her father followed behind pushing the stroller with her little sister in tow. The little girl stopped abruptly, and held her hand out “more money.” Her father smiled and gave her another penny. “Next year, we’ll bring more pennies.” he said. She ran up the hill, placed the penny gently on the headstone, and prayed.
The meaning of Memorial Day is summed up in this action from a small child. To remember and honor those who have served that have passed on.
So when you visit the cemetery, please take her father’s note to heart and bring more pennies. What does a coin on a headstone mean? We will always remember.
